Emphasis: How can I show what's most important / Oil Pastel Painting

This is an exploration of oil pastel technique and the design principle EMPHASIS.
You will design a composition including FIVE important things about you, but the focus will be on the MOST important thing.
Process:
1. Practice with oil pastels (here are 3 videos on technique to get you started)
you will use colored paper swatches and then attach in your sketchbook
2. Brainstorm
thumbnail sketches in sketchbook (4 or more)
3. Work up a best choice composition and
Must include your name and FIVE things about you (clues must be obvious to any viewer)
Does your work have a focal point (EMPHASIS)??
Did you place your emphasis within the RULE OF THIRDS lines??
4. sketch lightly with first VERY LIGHT layer of oil pastel
5. Progressively add layers until each section including background has at least 3 layers of color
6. Complete rubric and reflection (download below)

This artist uses a diagonal overlapping stroke

Oil Pastel Drawing- Time Lapsed

This artist uses many light layers of colors and blends with a soft tissue.,
He doesn't press hard until the very top layer so that the "tooth" of the paper
doesn't get clogged with color before the foreground objects are clear.

Special note: Tissues are better than fingers for blending

Basic Oil Pastel Techniques: Rule of 3's Example

Always blend 3 related colors (related to your overall color scheme) into
each section of your work
-using only one solid makes the work flat - like crayons

BEGIN:
4 Thumbnail Sketches (small quick sketch designs for larger work)
  • Each to include NAME and 5 things about you
  • The most important thing should be emphasized using E's & P's and The RULE OF THIRDS
  • NOTE: Contrast, line (leading line), movement, rhythm, space (what seems closest), and size are ways to emphasize what is important

Homework: Revise first set of thumbs

  • Is there a clear focal point (emphasis) that reveals what is most important?
  • Did you choose (or notice after you did it) 3-4 E's&P's that will point to your MOST IMPORTANT THING?
